“Stealing things is a glorious occupation, particularly in the art world.”
Malcolm McLaren

Our culture has become something that is completely and utterly in love with its parent. It’s become a notion of boredom that is bought and sold, where nothing will happen except that people will become more and more terrified of tomorrow, because the new continues to look old, and the old will always look cute.

Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock not only claimed that he came up with the music for “Anarchy in the UK” but that he borrowed the music to “Pretty Vacant” from Abba’s “SOS,” calling it sampling. “Ha, ha, ironic. Abba, but, they were really good.”

Most of the work that I’ve ever tried to initiate has always been through the nature of provocation. Make the ideas and exact the opposite feeling to what ordinary people would normally feel when they listen to a pop record. I’d rather have them jump out of their chair and destroy the radio that they listen to.

“You can’t deny he was very important. He was a very interesting character. He was a likeable rogue. Not without faults, but we all have our faults. But the faults made him better. The fact that he wasn’t actually a very good businessman made it more fun. He had a great sense of fun. His sense of humour was a great redeeming factor.”
• Jah Wobble

Funeral for MM: What a bastard that MM was. A charming bastard. Still something about him that remained interesting, naughty, provocative and calculatingly contrarian. He had that gift to provoke as a post-situ trickster. He did say some serious stuff about how we are put together as people made to consume and obey. Let us characterize him as a Debord-lite with a joy for living that Debord probably did not have. In Paris, I did my small part provoking some shock when I came out of nowhere in the audience at the Pompidou Center during the opening of a big retrospective of MM collaborator, Jamie Reid. His graphic work, album design etc. Helped define punk visuals. But at this retro, as museums have the ability to do, his work gained respect and lost strength. With every straight press accolade his work seemed hopelessly mainstream. But I still like his work. But anyway, there I was skulking in the audience with my conspicuous pig stickers. And there was Jamie holding court for the cameras and media. I emerged and slapped 2 conspicuous pig stickers on the huge collage mural to the agape shocked faces of everyone present except Reid who I’d warned about my action and who approved. Suddenly the media began flashing photos of me and wondering was I part of a performance or action or post-fluxus thing… That was fun and now that I think of it kind of stupid or brave depending on my mood. And, of course, I loved his maudlin approach to romance and his provocative notion of sexuality and his choice of Annabelle and the rockin [black burundi] sound of Adam & the ants and the better Bow Wow Wow [wow].
