Tuli Kupferberg [September 28, 1923-July 12, 2010] I have to always remember that Tuli was OLDER than my mother! He seemed to be the living manifestation of engagement via bemusement. An activist dynamic with a zen-like perspective. The Fugs were an extraordinarily influential band especially considering their politics and lo-fi DIY approach. Part of their appeal and influence is no doubt the inveterate and persistent radical critique of consumer/imperialist latter day living via that most potent of weapons humor or truth thru humor. Humor lubricates all unswallowable bitter pills. And that is the grand lesson I learned from Tuli. Him, the Fugs, Ed Sanders defined a scrappy counterculture opposition that seems as vital today as it ever was. His DIY xeroxed zines of lists and facts, and various politrix tracts were genius publications in that they showed an enthusiastic approach to research and that research fed creativity.  His simple [naive] drawings illustrated cultural lessons from the radical left. A view that seemed from the very beginning [when I was a late teen in the early 70s] to be so right on so clear and accurate but leavened with the right spices of irreverence, irony, bemusement. I met him a number of times but knew him less well than many of my close friends. He always seemed like a guy very little concerned about his status or hierarchical relations in the world of readings and writing.
His 1001 Ways to Beat the Draft (1966), a satirical piece of actual ways to become a pacifist and not support the military-industrial complex. Important for any growing boy in late 1960s America facing the potential for being drafted. To know there were crazed geniuses out there who were better able to portray the collective insanity of life in that era of America gave me great hope and moral support – you know, like you’re not the only one out there. His list pamphlets were genius syntheses of research and resistance backed by historical precedent.  One of his last published volumes is Teach Yourself Fucking, a collection of cartoons which was published by Autonomedia in 2000. The Fugs, the Groucho Marxist Beatnik rockers took their name from the bowdlerized version of “fuck” in a Norman Mailer novel The Naked and the Dead. He leaves behind a formidable legacy for us to continue to use as ammo against the dull establishment he so aptly lampooned throughout his life.

Abby Lincoln [August 6, 1930 – August 14, 2010] was a jazz vocalist of some heady consciosness. She wasn’t just some kind of flamboyant singer fronting a band. She was also known as a songwriter and actress. She was engaged in some major civil rights activism with her soon-to-be husband drummer Max Roach and their We Insist! – Freedom Now Suite (1960) which sparked her lifelong struggle against racism in the United States. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered into the ether.
Joe Strummer (August 21, 1952-December 22, 2002) was a favorite figure of cultural well-meaning [altho sometimes naive, which is OK as well] resistance. Trying to combine countercultural leftist critique while also pursuing a musical career, he embodied that fragile if sometime tautological lifestyle of a cultural resister.  I wrote a piece about “Magnificent Seven” for Brandon Labelle’s “Phantom Radio” project .

Rammelzee [1960 – June 28, 2010] Far Rockaway born rappers involved in writing, grafitti, art and rap, he was one of the first looped and wacked hiphoppers who actually broke thru the syndrome of perpetual posing – I mean I love Eric B & Rakim and early Run DMC but this guy was going for the trigger who made his mark via some early documentaries inc. Charlie Wild Style and had a role in Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise. I really like the punkier stuff he did with Death Comet Crew. Sensational in one way or another [maybe it is the outsider character] reminds me of Rammelzee…
The weird death of the lead singer Charles Haddon of the Ou Est Le Swimming Pool came at the time I was preparing this show so added him to the list of deaths [in the case of Strummer a remembrance through his birthdate]. He jumped to his death in a suicide after performing at a big Belgian pop festival
