Serge Gainsbourg is our alter-ego because he lived the life we men can only dream of: who else can say he had Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot, Isabelle Adjani, Catherine Deneuve, Anna Karina & Frans Gall within his reach as fans, lovers, partners. We could think of him as a strange kind of ugly-handsome everyman, painfully shy, who dabbled & succeeded in many arts including: song. Painting, photography, writing. Grafitti outside his home after his death at 5 rue Verneuil in Paris said: Serge is not Dead, he is in heaven fucking.”
He gained Anglo-Saxon recognition only after his death in 1991 which ensured his immortality. He lived a dream life but then squandered it to live a kind of sad diminished parody in his last years as a result of a heart attack & his trademark smoking.
But what sets him apart from say his nearest equivalent in Anglo culture, Leonard Cohen & Bob Dylan – both also Jewish & blessed with flawed, limited vocal capacities, which all 3 turned into a perk. It’s his role as a dandy, a rogue, & an outlaw that we embrace as part of
He is important because he reinvented French chanson & opened up French ears to music like Anglo-pop, rock & reggae. But more so gave it production, verve, weird dadastic poetics, & an edge.
The reason his work is so readily covered by modern musicians from Molecule to Mick Harvey, Blur, & the Downtown Knitting Factory is his great ear for sound.  He felt & understood the sound more than other singer-songwriters of his time, say the 50-60s. He had a sonic gift that gave it an edge, but also a rich ambience that allowed him to color his lyrics with a rich palette understood by a true musician. This is exemplified by his acknowledged masterwork: Ballad of Melody Nelson about an older man’s affair with a teen that captures not only John barry’s orchestral charm but a poignancy.
